What if a digital heart? Creating conscious machines using the Remote Mind Hypothesis (RMH)

The number of neurons in the human brain is at about 85 billion, and, just in the cerebellum, 70 billion, i.e., most of the time absolutely unconscious tasks. And Machine Learning applications are improving it (the automatic side) outside of our brain, what is a great opportunity to we dedicate our mind to relevant Cortex tasks, like creativity and collective intelligence, just to instance some of them.

In theory, this reality of performing activities without real awareness on the part of the machines is already a great evolution for the area of R&D, but what if the machines really can emulate the conscience and take one step more?

Actually, this is undoubtedly one of the key issues and the state of the art of AI, which I confess to being present in my own mind, with the most varied hypotheses and solutions.

However, as I often comment on my articles, one of the advantages of cognitive computing is that we can easily create and test hypotheses for our minds through models, embodied in algorithms and digital systems.

The Remote Mind Hypothesis (RMH)

This is the very case of RMH, a Remote Mind Hypothesis and a new model for our mind, a new mind model that I propose, based only on intuition.

The main principle and hypothesis is that, beyond our mind, which I call here local — and local software — there is a remote mind and a remote operating system, much more complex than our science has ever approached.

And in this new model, we can consider that the local mind is formed by both, the remote mind and our brain, i.e., there is no propagation in only one direction, but in multiple directions.

The main relevance of this hypothesis for our real life is proposing a new model of Artificial Intelligence in search of an AGI or general AI, or even, a strong AI, since if we really want it, we have to make sure we have enough models, while the truth is not proved, so this is just more one to we double check.

However, in this article, we will deepen a fundamental question in the area of AGI, which is the Artificial Consciousness.

The Consciousness

But what are consciousness and self-consciousness? After all, if we want to model AC, we need to define what is C, correct?

This is a question as complex as defining intelligence. For instance, some philosophers of mind consider consciousness or qualia just an illusion. Others consider that consciousness is all you experience.

However, my definition of consciousness seeks to separate and better understand the levels of my proposed Equation to Wisdom (W = I ^ C), and suitcase words that I consider closely related: Intelligence, Consciousness, and Wisdom.

– Intelligence is any effect without an original random cause.
– Human-like Intelligence is the ability to apply the knowledge to meet the objectives.
– Consciousness is the ability to define the objectives from the understanding of the environment and its laws.
– Wisdom is the ability to meet the objectives from the knowledge and the understanding of the environment and its laws.

In this sense, the key point to me is creating wise machines, focused on the understanding of the environment and its laws.

And in this context, I believe that relating consciousness to experience or even being, is not wrong, but at the very least it is incomplete.

To understand this view, I propose to use the most well-known conscious system we know, that is, the human, and separate my equation into two systems, that is, intelligence and consciousness.

The easiest part is to associate intelligence with our brain, but perhaps the most complex and difficult part is to associate consciousness to our heart.

Right, in my opinion, human consciousness is much more connected to what we perceive in the heart than in the brain, although research focuses solely on the brain. Obviously, I am not proposing here that we will find the consciousness in our heart, but we have at this organ a wonderful system, for our self-consciousness and consciousness.

Perhaps the most relevant of them, to leverage intelligence in wisdom, as proposed on my equation.

The Artificial Consciousness (AC)

In my opinion, on creating AGI, we are just seeing/copying nature in some sense, and what happens inside our brain system, i.e., Cortex (cognitive tasks, etc.) x Cerebellum (automatic tasks, like breath, drive, etc.), as far as we know.

In other words, based on my proposed Equation to Wisdom (W = I ^ C), as AI is not AC (Artificial Consciousness) and AGI is not AGC, or Artificial General Consciousness/Self-consciousness (the C of my equation), all we are creating is intelligent machines (I).

Indeed, nature is wise enough to don’t leave on our hands the art and knowledge, or even, the magic, of creating self-consciousness machines.

Anyway, we have the power to create some very high level of ‘artificial’ C, like using IoT to do this, that we can’t compare with our ‘live’ C, based on self-consciousness, instead of on dreams. And, the wisdom of nature is that this reality about C is the same about W, or wisdom, since C empowers the intelligence of the machine, as I propose in my equation, to address the problem of measure people/machines/etc. wisdom.

Actually, we have just dreamed about that, and Singularity hype is a famous dream example (my opinion).

And even Alan Turing just asked “Can machines think?” and not “Can machines be self-consciousness?”. By the way, a giant and genial question for 1950 years, that answer is so true today.

So, Artificial Intelligence and AGI are very relevant to our ‘wise’ evolution, despite the fact that we can use it on the wrong side. But this depends just on our Consciousness/Self-consciousness, and Wisdom.

The Digital Heart (DH): modeling AC with RMH

Unfortunately, most of our state of the art R&D, and AGI science is stuck to models where the brain creates the mind, and consciousness, which will make our cars, and robots, also stuck to the same models.

However, if the heart is modeled as a sensor system of our consciousness, and if consciousness is inside our mind, the remote mind model allows us to create a new paradigm of Digital Heart (DH) models, that I consider to be fundamental to create new models of artificial consciousness, maybe closer to the real one, the human consciousness, and not stuck to models where the brain creates the mind.

In fact, I prefer to name it Digital Heart (DH) than Artificial Heart, since the artificial physical device already exists with the mechanical functions, evidently in another relevant field of science.

And, for a practical understanding of the utility of such a model, we can imagine that a car with an autonomous driver of the future can make decisions with an artificial heart, modeled on a remote mind with artificial consciousness and self-consciousness, fundamental for making wise decisions, such as those that involve safety of passengers of various vehicles and pedestrians.

And, in my opinion, the way to address this and so many other machine evolutions is creating good models of Artificial Consciousness, where the best ones are likely to be closest to what consciousness really is, and how it works in people.
